What is Physical Education?

Physical education can be defined as education through movement. Physical education is a learning process that focuses on increasing knowledge and affecting attitudes and behaviours relative to physical activities, including exercise, sports, games, dance, aquatic activities, and outdoor adventure activities.  It is the passing of information, attitudes and skills from one person to another (Darst P, & Pangrazi, R 2005).

Physical education is an important component of the overall school program. It is an integral part of the total educational program that contributes, primarily through physical activity experience, to the total growth and development of all students. Physical education is an instructional program that gives attention to all learning domain; psychomotor, cognitive and affective (Darst P, & Pangrazi, R 2005).

Physical education can be a positive and exciting experience for students especially  for secondary students because they are able to experience many different activities, such as mountain bicycling, table tennis, ultimate Frisbee, skating with rollerblades, golf, rock climbing, tennis, soft lacrosse, group activities such as rope courses and wilderness survival (Darst P, & Pangrazi, R 2005).
