My timeline for completing my ACP

The Applied Curriculum Project will take place between June and August. The process for developing the final result will be a continuing process during three months. I have to form survey questions for the students, then I will be required to submit those questions for clarification. The next process will be to edit the questions and then re-submit them to the coordinator for final approval. The next step will be to implement the survey questions to the students and collect them.  Once all surveys are collected from all year levels I have to collaborate all of the data and form a report outlining the results from the surveys. Once the report is completed I will be required to submit the report to the coordinator.  Afterward I need to write a proposal for change to indicate what needs to be changed to improve the inter-house sporting competition and then, once completed I need to submit and present my findings to the head of the department and faculty members of the physical education and health department.

The house sports porgram and the relationship to adolescent learning.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar believes the relationship between the program and adolescent learning arises from students being engaged, included and motivated within the physical education program. Therefore,  my Applied Curriculum Project relates to adolescent learning through the physical education program. Physical education can be a positive and exciting experience for students especially  for secondary students because they are able to experience many different activities, such as mountain bicycling, table tennis, ultimate Frisbee, skating with roller blades, golf, rock climbing, tennis, soft lacrosse, group activities such as rope courses and wilderness survival (Darst P, & Pangrazi, R 2005).

My Applied Curriculum Project will be able to reinsure the school that the students learning needs are being meet within the current house sports program.

What is Physical Education?

Physical education can be defined as education through movement. Physical education is a learning process that focuses on increasing knowledge and affecting attitudes and behaviours relative to physical activities, including exercise, sports, games, dance, aquatic activities, and outdoor adventure activities.  It is the passing of information, attitudes and skills from one person to another (Darst P, & Pangrazi, R 2005).

Physical education is an important component of the overall school program. It is an integral part of the total educational program that contributes, primarily through physical activity experience, to the total growth and development of all students. Physical education is an instructional program that gives attention to all learning domain; psychomotor, cognitive and affective (Darst P, & Pangrazi, R 2005).

Description Description of the current interschool house sporting competition

Bacchus Marsh Grammar physical education program offers each year level and house three different types of sport every term. Two of these sports is a traditional sport and the other one is a contemporary sport. The school provides first class facilities for students to participate in physical education, such as a gigantic gym where they have opportunities to use fitness technologies and equipment, and they even have their own dance studio.

The school has four house teams which are called Bacchus, Pentland, Hilton, Braeside. These house teams will compete against all  students in their own year level. They will undergo the the house competition every fortnight.

The physical education program at Bacchus Marsh Grammar is delivered based on the foundation principals of the promoting physical activity/skill development curriculum model. This model is the most common at the secondary level because it has a broad-based multi-activity approach that focus on promoting physical activity and developing physical skills with students. It uses units of physical activity or sport as the basic core of the curriculum which vary in length. The model has a primary focus on learning motor skills and the activities changes on the desires, needs and interest of students.  This is shown by the design of the physical educational program at Bacchus Marsh Grammar because it represents a student centered focus curriculum, a broad multi-activity approach as shown by a wide variety of sports and activities, the students are learning during the course of the year. The school also has a high focus of promoting physical activity and developing physical skills with students.

The objectives and rational for my ACP?

Bacchus Marsh Grammar would like for me to conduct this applied curriculum project because the school has introduced a new program into the school within the last 18 months and the physical education and health department is extremely keen to discover whether the sports being offered are keeping the students engaged, included, motivated to learn the particular sport and how they feel about the inter-house sport competition program.

Currently the school has a variety of sports within the house sports curriculum. Therefore Bacchus Marsh Grammar would also like to be informed in which type of sport the students are gaining the most and least benefits, experiences and enjoyment.

The Physical Education and Health Department at the school assigned this Applied Curriculum Project for me because it will be the first review of the program since being implemented 18 months ago and are eager to see how the program has been adapted by the students.  The school also believes this project will benefit the students learning outcomes as it will be able to implement some of the changes to the sporting program.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar expects to gain information that directs further implementation of the school inter-house sports program. The school wants to discover student’s opinion of current house competition and what changes in activities/sports the students may desire.

What Is an Applied Curriculum Project ( ACP)?

An Applied Curriculum Project is a project where pre-service teachers, mentor teachers and a university colleague work as a team on a curriculum initiative that benefits the learning of school students. It involves formal supervised teaching practice as well as a wide range of other curriculum and teaching activities. In Applied Curriculum Projects pre-service teachers and mentor teachers, supported by the partnerships coordinator (PC) (student teacher coordinator) and university colleague, work together to identify an area that requires research, development and implementation at the school. This project is school needs-based and involves the team of pre-service teachers at each school working to support the learning of students at the school.  Projects are varied in their development processes and their outcomes.

Some ideas might include:
  •   Early Years Literacy and Numeracy Program support
  •  Organisation of special events, such as camps, performances, science fairs, etc.
  •   Support specific curriculum initiatives such as maths, SOSE, PE or Middle Years Support

Digital Artefact for my ACP

The digital artefact that will assist me in completing in ACP is a website called survey monkey.
Survey Monkey is an easy-to-use tool for the creation of online surveys. It offers a flexible and cost-effective, web-based survey tool that enables you to quickly and efficiently conduct research on any topic.
